Er Enish is a traditional Kyrgyz form of mounted wrestling. This discipline originated from military needs and historically served practical combat purposes. Victory in Er Enish depends not only on the rider’s strength and skill, but also on the qualities of the horse. A suitable horse must be strong and solid, with stability, agility, a calm temperament, perfect responsiveness to the rider, and endurance.
Today, Er Enish competitions are held on a flat, circular field. Two wrestlers compete while mounted on horseback, bare to the waist. They wear a kushak (belt), a headscarf, durable trousers, and boots, and each rider holds a kamcha (whip). At the start, the riders approach the center of the circle on the referee’s command. The match begins upon signal. To win, a wrestler must pull the opponent off the horse so that any part of the opponent’s body touches the ground.
