Gyulesh
Gyulesh is a traditional Azerbaijani style of wrestling. Wrestlers wear a national costume consisting of strong, specially tailored loose trousers (shalvar) with a soft belt, and soft shoes. The trousers extend slightly below the knees and are tightly narrowed. Grips are allowed on the body, legs, belt, and any part of the trousers. Trips are permitted. In ground wrestling, it is allowed to turn the opponent onto their back using grips on the body, legs, or trousers, as well as with the help of one’s own legs. Before the match, wrestlers perform a one-minute warm-up called “meydan gazmek” to music and exchange greetings. The bout begins in a unique way: the wrestlers step to the center, shake hands, and without releasing the grip, push each other with their shoulders. On the third, strongest push, they separate and begin the match. To win, a wrestler must pin the opponent on both shoulders. Rolls or brief touches of the shoulders to the mat are not considered a defeat. Victory can also be awarded for a greater number of successful techniques.
